Are “Natural" Fragrance Oils the same as Essential Oils?
Not quite. While “natural” fragrance oils may begin with plant-based materials, they are modified in a lab to isolate, enhance, or standardize specific scent compounds. While not always synthetic in origin, they are chemically altered and often include a mix of natural and synthetic components, including “nature-identical” aroma chemicals created to mimic plant scents.
It is also important to note that many “natural” fragrance oils contain synthetic compounds, despite being marketed as plant-based. Phrases like “infused with essential oils” are often used to make products appear more natural than they truly are. In most cases, these fragrances are lab-made, with only a small amount of essential oil added for marketing purposes.
They are not the same as pure essential oils or whole plant extracts.
At Wndrmade, we craft our fragrances using only pure essential oils and botanical extracts. We never use fragrance oils, whether synthetic or labeled as “natural.”
This commitment began as a personal one. After a health diagnosis, our co-founder Alice developed a heightened sensitivity to synthetic fragrance, often experiencing migraines and nausea from exposure. That experience inspired us to create Wndrmade as a truly natural alternative for those who want to avoid synthetic fragrance and appreciate the depth and beauty of real botanical ingredients. Our goal is to create plant-based fragrances that are intentional, complex, and genuinely rooted in nature.

Do essential oils last as long as fragrance oils?
They will not be as overpowering or artificially intense, and that is by design. Fragrance oils are often engineered to be cheaper, stronger, and more immediately noticeable. Essential oils are more nuanced. They speak with intention.
Our scents are meant to be subtle and natural, like walking through a forest or brushing against herbs in a garden. They evolve over time and tend to stay closer to the skin or linger gently in the air without overwhelming your senses or your space.
We design our fragrances to unfold gradually, creating a natural and atmospheric experience rather than a synthetic cloud. They may not smell as strong at first, but they last just as long and offer authenticity, complexity, and a true connection to the plants they come from.
Are your fragrances phthalate-free and made without synthetic preservatives?
Yes. Our fragrances are phthalate-free and made without synthetic preservatives.
We do not use fragrance oils. We use only real plant ingredients, including pure essential oils and botanical extracts. Every ingredient is carefully selected to stay true to our commitment to actual plant-based formulations. Nothing is chemically reconstructed or made in a lab to imitate nature.
Are your fragrances safe for people with allergies or sensitivities?
All Wndrmade fragrances are made with pure essential oils and whole botanical extracts, offering a thoughtful option for those sensitive to synthetic fragrance. Our products are free from fragrance oils, as well as phthalates and chemical preservatives. If you have allergies to specific essential oils, feel free to contact us. We’ll be happy to confirm whether any are used in a particular blend.
